Abstract
Background:
@EN In order to analyze an Escherichia coli bacteremic outbreak in eight leukemic patients in hemato-oncology unit from July to September, 1994.
@ES Methods:
@EN We have examined the antibiogram, plasmid typing, and field inversion gel electrophoresis of eight isolates of E. coli.
@ES Results:
@EN: All patients were diagnosed as acute leukemia. Among them, four patients were in the same room at the time of the outbreak. All showed granulocytopenia and had received ciprofloxacin as a gut decontamination regimen. All strains showed
resistance
to fluoroquinolones. The plasmid typing patterns were quite different from each other. The analysis of field inversion gel electrophoresis also revealed eight different patterns.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN Disproving our initial assumption that the outbreak might have originated from a single clone, the genotyping patterns showed little evidence of person-to-person transmission. We have shown that molecular typing is useful in distinguishing
individual strains of E. coli isolatcs for epidemiological purposes.
